Contributed to the public domain by Lars Jensen
Updated Oct 17, 2004 (added RBDeveloper errata)
This
site aims to be a primary source of how-to information for users of REALbasic.
Think of it as an open-source, online book that complements the product documentation.
The focus is on topics that tend to cause problems for REALbasic users
as they broaden their reachgotchas,
typical mistakes and misconceptions, and common needs that might be familiar in
other environments but aren't obvious in RB. Contributors are people in
the REALbasic community who are in a position to know what they're talking about.
What
sets this apart from other REALbasic sites?
Mainly, it's the human touch when it comes
to formatting, editing, cross-referencing, indexing, and maintenance. Outside
contributions are welcome, but not automaticeach one is edited by hand,
with an eye to keeping all parts of the site relevant, clear, definitive, and
current at all times. Material that needs updating will be clearly marked as such,
and removed if it becomes obsolete.
We hope to attract contributors who
value quality of presentation, who otherwise might not contribute to something
like a wiki or database-driven
site, and who don't want to maintain their own site. We hope to attract readers
who value quality of information over quantity.
Another important distinction is
that much of the material on these pages is in the public domain, for maximum
usefulness. Note that this might not apply to material that is linked to by this
site; that is, if the best write-up of a topic is on someone else's copyrighted
site, we will link to that site (in a separate window, to make the separation
obvious) rather than reproducing the information here, or framing the linked site.
You can easily tell if you're on external site by checking the top or bottom of
the page.
How
often is this site updated?
As often as necessary to keep up with new material
and error-fixing. There's no fixed schedule; this is just a hand-crafted web site.
If you want to be notified of updates, email
us.
I'd
like to contributewhere do I start?
Bully for you! Look at the Table
of Contents and pick an unlinked topic that you can be authoritative about.
If nothing grabs you, make up a topic of your own (see "focus" above).
Then email
us, in case someone's already working on it.
How
long should an article be? Do I need pictures? What format should I use?
There's no standard. Articles might be a few
sentences or several pages; a
page or two is typical. Say what you need to say.
The goal is to make good material accessible, not to bulk up the site or turn
everyone into professional writers. If you don't want to tidy up your own dangling
participles, we'll do it for you.
If you can't make pretty pictures, we'll figure something out. Plain text submissions
are preferred, since we've got to reformat it all as HTML at some point.
How
do I request that a topic be added, or that an article be written? Email us,
or mention it on the REALbasic
NUG, Games, or Getting Started
mailing
lists.
How
much do I get paid?
The same as we do: $0.00 (USD). Naturally, you'll
get attribution, but this is an all-volunteer community resource; don't contribute
anything that you feel a need to control or profit from. Unless we have agreed
otherwise in advance, by submitting material to this site, you stipulate that
it is, to your knowledge, free of any copyright, patent, trademark or other intellectual
property encumbrances, other than those that you hold, and you agree to relinquish
all such intellectual property rights to said material into the public domain,
as of the moment you submit it.
